☆ Opposite celebrations for Valentine's Day

今日はバレンタインデーです。
皆さんは、誰かにチョコレートをあげましたか？
あるいはもらいましたか？
今年は自分にチョコレートを買う、
マイチョコが流行っているそうです。
日本では、同僚や友人ともチョコレートの交換などしますが
海外ではない習慣なんです。
ご存知でしたか？

What's opposite to the way Valentine's Day
is celebrated in my country? Well, for starters,
Valentine's Day is usually celebrated between
a boyfriend and girlfriend, or a husband and
wife only. But in Japan, Valentine's Day is usually
only for men, and the Japanese women buy the
gifts only. In the USA, Canada, Europe and Australia
it is a romantic day, both men and women buy
gifts for each other. We never buy chocolate for
our co-workers on Valentine's Day in those countries.
We usually give chocolate to show our 'love' on the day.
I think it is nice giving gifts of chocolate to many
people on the day, because then they won't feel lonely
or sad. Sometimes in my country it is very lonely for
people without a special person to celebrate Valentine's
Day with. It's nice making my co-workers happy on
Valentine's Day!

For starters - for example (it is more casual language)
co-worker - 同僚
"co"は共同という意味を持っています。
"co-worker"だと一緒に働く人ということで同僚なんですね。
他にもco-editor, co-writer, co-driverなどあります。
ちなみに、"ex"が付くと「前の」という意味になるので
"ex-girlfriend"や"ex-husband"というと・・・お分かりですね？
元カノや前夫になるわけです。

バレンタインデーにチョコレートを上げる習慣は、
初めはチョコレートを売ろうとチョコレートメーカーが始めた策でした。
日本はそれ以来、恋人だけでなく義理チョコとして
周りの知り合いにもチョコレートを上げるようになりましたね。
でも、海外では、恋人や夫婦だけの特別な日なんです。
さて、今年はマイチョコが流行っているそうなので、
私も今日は自分にチョコレートを買って帰ろうかな？？
