☆ Sports in Australia 2: Soccer

今回もオーストラリアのスポーツについて。
オーストラリアでもサッカーが人気だそうです。
日本は昨年のワールドカップでオーストラリアと対戦しましたが
なかなかの強敵でした！

This weekend (17-18 February) is the A-League Grand Final
in Melbourne. The A-League is the new major soccer
competition in Australia. It began in 2005 and has 8 teams
(7 from Australia and one from New Zealand).
Soccer became very popular in Australia during the World
Cup last year. There was a lot of publicity and excitement
because the Australian team was part of the World Cup
finals in Germany. This was unusual as the Australian
soccer competiton (prior to the A-League) was not very
popular. Australian Rules football (AFL) and Rugby League
football (NRL) are a lot more popular than soccer.
However, things are changing. Soccer matches are being
played in larger stadiums and more people want to go to
see matches than before. In a "sports mad" country like
Australia, more sport is always a good thing.

sports mad - "mad"は「熱狂した、夢中な」という意味があるので、
「スポーツに夢中な」と訳すといいですね

オーストラリアでサッカーが人気になったのは
ごく最近の事なのですね。
A-Leagueと言うのも、２００５年からとするとまだ新しいです。
２・３年の内にワールドカップに出場し
決戦まで行くのはすばらしい事！
人気は無くても元々実力のある国なんですね。
日本も負けじと頑張りましょう！
