Whenever an unfortunate situation happens
we can use the popular expression: "that's
the way the cookie crumbles". It is an
expression that also means that we have no
control over a situation, so we need to
accept what has happened without getting
upset or angry about it. For example, if someone
buys a cake for a special occasion and
accidentally drops it we can say, "oh well,
that's the way the cookie crumbles." For such
situations in Japan we can use it for when we
miss the train, it starts to rain, when we forget
to buy something from the supermarket, or when
we don't get something we want. So it's a very
flexible expression to use. It's also a good
expression to use when you're speaking with a
native English speaker, as it is an everyday one.
Remember, it is a positive expression for a
negative or unfortunate situation.

crumble=砕ける、ぼろぼろになる
upset=心を乱す、取り乱す
=sad, unhappy, general negative feelings
Accidentally=偶然に、誤って
=an accident, not something that was planned
Special occasion=特別な行事
=special event, such as an anniversary celebration or birthday

何かうまくいかない事があったときに、
それを運命のせいにする。
そんな時にこのフレーズを使いましょう。
