Idiom: Don't burn your bridges

「Dont' burn your bridge」
は４月にふさわしい諺です。
「burn bridge」で「関係を絶つ」
という意味になりますので、
「don't burn your bridge」は
自分の築いてきた人間関係を崩すな
という事。

Have you heard of the well known idiom
'Don't burn bridges'? This idiom gives
good advice about managing relationships
in a friendly way. It means be careful how
you treat people and don't damage or
destroy relationships. For example, Ben
was so unfriendly at high school, he
burned all his bridges.
As you can see, idioms are not just used
for fun, they are used to give advice too.
This idiom has no age barrier. So you
can say this to anyone when you think
they are in danger of damaging a relationship.
Sometimes this idiom is used to describe a
person's reputation too. Reputation means
'image' of character or personality. For
example, Ben burned his bridge when he
cheated on his exam. This literally means
that Ben killed his image, because he cheated.
Remember, this idiom is showing that
when a bridge is burned it cannot be
repaired or renewed. It's a good warning.
