Cherry Blossoms "Signal" the Arrival of Spring

ついに４月になりました。
東京の桜は散ってきてしまっていますが、
お花見には行かれましたか？
桜が開花すると、日本人は春の訪れを感じますね。
皆様は特に何を見ると、春を感じますか？

Recently, in class, we talked about spring
and cherry blossoms. We also talked
about what things “signal” the arrival
of other seasons. Look at some of the
student examples below.

“Seeing watermelon in the supermarket
signals the arrival of summer.”
“My mother putting out the hot carpet
signals the beginning of winter.”
“McDonald’s Tsukimi Burger signals
the arrival of fall.”

How about for you? When do you
say to yourself, “Yeah! Summer is here! ”
or “Oh, no! Winter is coming.”

signal=〜の前兆となる、示唆する
